The ultimate accessory to a shiny gold trophy (or flute of Champagne) is a perfectly polished manicure. Case in point? The bejewelled Golden Globes celeb nails we spotted on the award show’s 2023 red carpet.
As the stars stepped out in Beverly Hills for an evening of glamour at the 80th edition of the Golden Globes, the Swarovski crystal-encrusted nails worn by Selena Gomez and diamond-flecked polish spotted on Margot Robbie captured the essence of Hollywood reunited in all its lavish glory.
Below, we’re rounding up five of the iciest manicures of the night and how celebrity nail artists from Tom Bachik to Betina Goldstein achieved the maximum-bling manis. Plus, we’ve gathered the polishes, tools, and maintenance necessities (with recommendations straight from the red carpet!) to use if you’re looking to if you’re looking to create your own Golden Globes-inspired manicure at home.
Selena Gomez’s Swarovski-embellished claws
The artiste behind Gomez’s crystal-embellished Golden Globes mani is none other than A-list manicurist Tom Bachik, her go-to for campaigns and red carpets over the years. Bachik labeled this look “Mabel’s mani” — a nod to Gomez’s character in Only Murder in the Building, for which she received a nomination last night in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series category. “We wanted to use a softer shade with a bit of sparkle to contrast the deep dark drama of her @maisonvalentino gown 🖤,” he shared in an Instagram caption. Further revealing his creative process, Bachik wrote that he began by using stiletto-shaped Gel-X nail tips topped with two coats of a pinky-nude polish for a neutral base. As for the pièce de résistance (the bling, of course), a luxe mixture of fine glitter and Swarovski pixie dust was placed overtop for extra sparkle and dimension.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s gold chrome talons
Golden Globe-nominated actress Anya Taylor-Joy has us feeling some kind of way about chrome manicures with her electric gold-meets-green set of almond-shaped nails that pop against her canary yellow Dior co-ord. Last year, we marvelled at Hailey Bieber’s subtle glazed donut nails with their neutral approach to chrome, but in 2023 this manicure finisher may be due for a vibrantly pigmented makeover. And Taylor-Joy is clearly pioneering the movement. What would the Golden Globes be without a little gilded glamour, right?
Margot Robbie’s subtle metallic pink manicure
Hiya, Barbie! We know Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie film isn’t set to hit theatres until summer 2023, but Margot Robbie is either still in character or well-prepared for future press tour looks with this subdued glitter manicure that oozes Barbie girl energy. Painted by Bachik, this “soft but deliberate” set was created with an Essie base coat over manicured nails and a single coat of what he labels a “rich girl shade” — Essie’s sheer pale pink Hi Maintenance polish, in this case. For that sparkling finish, Bachik applied a thin even layer of FX Expressie polish in the shade Holo, a pearly top coat infused with a diamond-like glitter flecks. “This gave our nails just the right amount of sparkle to mimicking the sequins in the dress,” he shared in the caption of his post.
Quinta Brunson’s custom ombre press-ons
On Quinta Brunson’s blinged-out press-on mani, celebrity nail artist Temeka Jackson shared in a press release that she wanted her client’s nails to say “classy, fierce, phenomenal woman,” and that they did. With crystal embellishments and a sharp-tipped shape, Brunson’s custom ombre nails were in fierce competition with her newly awarded Golden Globe trophy, which she received as the winner of Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series for her work in Abbott Elementary. After applying KISS press-on nails, Jackson personalized this set for Brunson by reshaping each nail from coffin to a more medium-pointed length and added a couple of extra crystals to enhance the pre-existing ombre design.
Julia Garner’s diamond-dusted tips
On the red carpet, Ozark’s Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, Comedy or Drama award winner Julia Garner debuted an ultra-thin diamond French manicure sure to capture the heart of minimalists worldwide. Chanel nail artist Betina Goldstein took to Instagram reels to share her product list used to achieve these “diamond dust tips.” The ballet slipper shade used at the base of this look is Chanel’s Longwear Nail Colour in Ballerina, with a glittery silver polish used for the thinly-painted tips.
