It might be fashion’s biggest night of the year, but that doesn’t mean beauty takes a backseat on the Met Gala red carpet. And Monday night’s “gilded glamour” theme saw many celebs up the fashion ante even further with their chosen beauty looks.
The 2022 Met Gala brought together the biggest names in the entertainment, fashion and beauty industries, and A-list attendees wore their most avant-garde ensembles, resulting in red carpet buzz surrounding the parade of experimental garments. But this year proved that hair, makeup and nails are part of the overall package.
After all, it was during the Gilded Age that cosmetics became more accessible thanks to the industrial revolution. And while the era’s penchant for soft hues translated to rosy cheeks on the 2022 Met Gala red carpet, many celebrities took a more modern approach to beauty with colourful lids, dewy skin and, yes, bleached eyebrows.
We’ve rounded up the most memorable beauty moments from the 2022 Met Gala in the gallery below.
Cynthia Erivo
Rocking archived Louis Vuitton, Cynthia Erivo was one attendee to notably acknowledge the disparities of the Gilded Age era. Her dramatic white head scarf honoured Black women from the 1800s who were forced to cover their hair.
Quannah Chasinghorse
Model and activist Quannah Chasinghorse’s partially braided updo nodded to her culture with traditional Indigenous adornments and was created by Amika’s global artistic director and hair genius Naeemah LaFond.
Kiki Layne
Kiki Layne’s large, rounded afro was a powerful celebration of Black beauty, and the flower petals across her lids (they were hand-picked off her dress) delivered soft, whimsical glamour.
Caroline Trentini
Caroline Trentini’s glistening sculpted updo looked like a pure work of art.
Winnie Harlow
Supermodel Winnie Harlow commanded attention in a futuristic 3D mini dress finished off with an otherworldly headpiece and fluttery eyelashes.
Cara Delevingne
Taking “gilded glamour” to the extreme, model Cara Delevingne showed up topless and painted in gold.
Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain’s sequined-meets-bejewelled chapeau gave off fortune-teller vibes in the best of ways. And the single earring? Perfection.
Kaia Gerber
Kaia Gerber’s uber-long cascade of curls calls to mind a Pre-Raphaelite painting.
Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling is a vision with lilac makeup.
Alicia Keys
Can we just take a moment to really admire Alicia Keys’s elaborate braid?
Alicia Keys
And one more shot of the front because her gilded, sculpted baby hairs are giving us life.
Naomi Campbell
The one and only Naomi Campbell paired her black and silver bejeweled Burberry gown with a face full of gems.
Camila Mendes
Camila Mendes embraced the theme with sparkling gold shadow around her temples and a whispy tendril updo.
Alton Mason
Alton Mason (who made history as Chanel’s first-ever Black male runway model) absolutely slayed graphic onyx liner.
Precious Lee
Curve model Precious Lee opted for washed-out brows against a slick black eyeliner look.
Conan Gray
Feminine and masculine vibes brilliantly collide with singer Conan Gray’s choice of hair jewels and flushed cheeks.
Chloe Bailey
Singer Chloe Bailey was a vision in gold wearing an exaggerated neackpiece, her gorgeous locs pulled back into a high ponytail.
Iris Law
Jude Law’s model daughter, Iris Law, chose blue eyeshadow that echoed the colour of her cutout gown. Just stunning.
Jodie Turner-Smith
Jodie Turner-Smith channeled the theme with era-appropriate, thin eyebrows topped with the most delicate, modern jewels.
Kendall Jenner
Here’s another bleached brow transformation à la Kendall Jenner.
Isabelle Boemeke
Isabelle Boemeke brought one of the most detailed looks of the night with her intricate graphic black eyeliner and over-the-top manicure complete with jewels, baubles and gold drips.
Lizzo
Lizzo’s dark matte purple lip and voluminous hair were everything.
Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe lit up the red carpet with her bedazzled black-and-silver headpiece and bright red lip.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian went full-on platinum for her Mariyln Monroe moment. The “Keeping Up with the Kardashian”’s star wore the iconic blonde beauty’s actual dress from 1962.
Maisie Williams
Sporting bleach blonde eyebrows and a slicked-black wig, it’s like Maisie Williams knew exactly what Arya Stark would wear to the Met Gala.
Sophie Turner
A pregnant Sophie Turner wore her signature red hair parted down the center and softly crimped into loose finger waves. With skinny brows, she finished her look with a matte, cherry-red lip.
Kate Moss
Take a page from Kate Moss’s book: Sometimes there’s nothing chicer than a simple red lip paired with loose, tousled waves.
Maude Apatow
First time Met Gala attendee Maude Apatow nailed a classic Hollywood beauty look.
Paloma Elsesser
Another great wig moment? Size-inclusive model Paloma Elsesser’s short, choppy bob.
Teyana Taylor
Last but certainly not least, Teyana Taylor served up futuristic glamour with purple makeup that complimented her jaw-dropping headpiece.
